Brooklyn Amity School’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) students proudly volunteered for a full-day professional development program held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and organized by NYSATA Region 8.
The mission of the event was to support art educators through immersive, hands-on workshops that emphasized process-based learning, sustainability, and community-centered art practices. By working directly with practicing artists, participating teachers explored new approaches they can bring back to their classrooms, strengthening art education across the region.
Student Service Behind the Scenes
Throughout the day, Brooklyn Amity School NAHS students served as all-day volunteers, supporting every stage of the program. Students prepared workshop materials, assisted with installation and setup, and ensured that each session ran smoothly. This behind-the-scenes work offered students valuable insight into the planning, collaboration, and labor required to make meaningful educational experiences possible.
Workshops and Artistic Engagement
The program featured two workshops led by artists Borinquen Gallo and Katherine Huala. While teachers participated in the workshops, NAHS students supported the artists and facilitators, observing how sustainability, collective making, and process-driven art can shape powerful learning experiences.
One NAHS student also served as the event photographer, documenting both workshops and capturing moments from the exhibition of Ruth Asawa. Through this role, the student highlighted how repetition, craftsmanship, and collaboration are central to both teaching and artistic practice.
Learning Through Service
By supporting an event dedicated to teacher learning, NAHS students experienced how student service directly strengthens art education. They witnessed meaningful exchanges between artists and educators and learned that art education thrives through preparation, collaboration, and shared purpose.
Brooklyn Amity School is proud of its NAHS students for representing the school with responsibility, curiosity, and heart, and for contributing to a day focused on empowering art educators.
Thank you to NYSATA Region 8 for organizing this inspiring professional development experience and for their continued dedication to supporting art teachers and students throughout our community.
